The winter at Valley Forge was very miserable for the Continental Army. The conditions may not have been very different from what they were used to, but the living conditions were still poor. Supplies were very limited, but were there, and many people didn't have shoes in the cold, snowy tundra.
Problems Faced by the Soldiers #1
George Washington had better living conditions than the lower-ranking people. He got an actual house, that was made of stone, and had multiple chimneys. And it's a decent-sized house as well.
Problems Faced by the Soldiers #2
The soldier's living quarters weren't as good. They lived in little cabins and put 12 people in each cabin. These cabins were very quickly made.
Training with Baron Fredrick von Steuben
The soldiers were cold. Everything is cold in the winter. I am sure some of the soldiers lost fingers and toes.
The soldiers got ill. Poor sanitation and very compact living quarters took their tole when it started to warm up and large numbers of soldiers perished from Dysentry, Typhoid Fever, Typhus, and Influenza.
Baron Fredrick von Steuben was a Prussian Military person who Benjamin Franklin met in Paris. Baron Fredrick Vonn Steuben was recruited for the Continental Army and implemented better training practices and better sanitation. This made the Continental Army more even with the British forces.
