- The kingdom was divided and was given to the sons. The sons often fought over their shares of lands. The sons spent so much time and energy fighting that they lost so much power to the local nobles. The Franks began to accept their leadership of the government. The Frankish leaders grew weaker in the kings household.
- Charles Martel became known as the most powerful Mayor. he led the Franks in the battle of Tours. The Franks defeated an army of Arabs and Berbers.
- When Charles Martel died, his son, Pepin, became mayor of the palace. with the help of the pope and most Frankish nobles, Pepin removed the king and started a new dynasty. Pepin got anointed by the pope.
