Crispin flees his village of Stromford after John Aycliffe declares him a wolf's head. Crispin is given this title after being framed for stealing money.
Crispin stumbles across an old village where he meets a large fellow named Bear.
Crispin befriends Bear and is taught some very useful skills such as playing music. They both leave the broken down village and begin to travel to a new village.
Using his new skill, Crispin and Bear distract the guard and sneak into a huge village known as Great Wexley.
Bear is captured by John Aycliffe in Great Wexley and is taken to Lord Furnivall's Palace.
Crispin frees Bear after a deal with John Aycliffe, but Aycliffe dishonors the bargain and tries to kill Crispin. Bear challenges Aycliffe to a fight which he wins. Bear and Crispin then leave the dreaded village.
