Most of the people traveling were from eastern and southern Europe. Traveling in Europe was often difficult. People sometimes had to walk far distances to just get to the boat. sometimes 3,000 people were traveling in one boat.

The trips across the atlantic ocean were always hard. The ships were always crowded and dirty. One of the first things they saw was the statue of liberty.

Officers greeted the ferryboat as it docked at ellis island, and passed out numbered identity cards. The immigrants entered the baggage room and left all their belongings.

Each arriving Steamboat crew gave officials at Ellis Island a list Russian names of the list of passengers on board. The manifest, as the list was called add the name and description of each passenger.
Legal detains lived in a dormitory room on the third floor. They would wait a few days or even a month. Then their case would be reviewed in the hearing room. people who burned the chain for medical reasons were cared for at the island hospital or kept in quarantine.

An area on the first floor of the building became known as the "kissing post." It got it's nickname because it is where family and friends waited for their loved ones.
