Lyddie is riding to Lowell in a carriage from Vermont . However, rains turn the road into mud which eventually the carriage got stuck in the mud. This is character vs nature because the mud, which is madee from dirt and rain which is part of nature, is the thing the carriage is stuck in. Since no one purposely got them stuck, it is nature's fault.
When Lyddie gets to Lowell, she meats some girls who tell her she has to get better cloths for when she works in the factory. So, Lyddie has to spend the last of her money to buy clothes and shoes but since she needs money, she doesn't want to and feels guilty. However, she knows she needs them. This is character vs self because she is arguing with herself about whether she should have spent the money. She is not fighting with another person, society, or nature so it has he be herself.
