Hi! I'm Samshritha Pochanapeddi. I'm going to show you 5 of Freud's defense mechanisms.
Ugh, look at her annoying little face. God, I hate her SO much. I just want to slap her.
I WANT MOMMY! i DON'T WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL!STOP THE BUS! I DON'T WANNA GO!
According to Freud, these defense mechanisms are the ego's protective methods of reducing anxiety by unconsciously distorting reality.
Reaction formation is when unacceptable feelings and impulses are switched into their opposite reactions, usually exaggerated. For example, the lady in the red dress hates the other woman but wears a very big smile they meet.
FINE! WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT!?!
YOUNG LADY, GO TO YOUR ROOM NOW!
Regression is the act of retreating to a more infantile psychosexual stage in order to seek comfort. For example, the little boy sucks on his thumb for comfort and the big girl throws a tantrum about not wanting to go and seeks comfort from her mom.
I think you got the reports mixed up with someone else.
Rationalization is when self-justification is offered to cover true, unconscious motives. For example, the woman drinks because everyone else is doing so too and that it makes her more enjoyable.
If everyone is drinking, then it's fine for me to do it as well. And so what if I drink too much? It just makes me more sociable and fun to be around.
Displacement is the act of transferring aggressive/sexual impulses onto someone/something else, usually one that is much weaker. For example, the girl yells at her brother because she is angry at her mom.
What?...No I wasn't-
DON'T TAKE OUT YOUR ANGER ON YOUR POOR LITTLE BROTHER!
Denial is refusing to belive painful or shocking realities despite evidence. For example, the woman and her husband can't fathom the fact that she has cancer despite her reports and try to deny it.
You have cancer, ma'am...I'm sorry...
What?... Ther-there's no way....There's no way I have cancer. I never smoked, always wore sunscreen, and never worked in a hazardous environment, so why me?
