  • Hey mom, what's CRISPR?
  • CRISPR
  • Crispr is a way to find a specific piece of DNA in a living thing. It gives us the technology to be able to edit genes.
  • First, scientists insert a fake virus into a body cell and to remove it, a spacer is created from the virus. This is made into a CRISPER sequence and then into CRISPR RNA.
  • This RNA guides the body to target and change the function of a gene, kind of like a pair of scissors that cut out unwanted DNA.
  •
  • Crispr is being used to change the genes of plants and sometimes test on animals, and is even be used to remove diseases and change human genes!
  • So... Why can't everyone have CRISPR edited DNA so we're healthier?
  • Well... there are many reasons.
  • CRISPR technology is still new, and we don't want to get it wrong. Genes being targeted could be changed in the wrong way, and that could eventually impact a much larger population. Some people debate if CRISPR is morally right.
  • oops!
  • What do you mean 'morally right'?
  • Many people believe it is unnatural to change our own genes, or change a baby before it can decide.
