- My apparition rose from the fall of lead,Declared, 'I am a civilian.' It only servedTo aggravate your fright. For how could IHave risen, a being of this world, in that hourOf impartial death! And I thought also: nor isYour quarrel of this world.
- The civilian identified himself as such upon meeting the soldier, but the soldier’s fright got the best of him. The civilian imagines the soldier’s thoughts, how the soldier recalls his training not to leave a questionable individual alive, how he knows he “should” shoot but does he know why?
- I know what is supposed to do, but it’s likely i has no idea why i should do it, or even what it would accomplish.
- I hope some dayIntent upon my trade of living, to be checkedIn stride by your apparition in a trench,Signaling, I am a soldier.
- No hesitation then,But I shall shoot you clean and fair
- If I one day were to surprised by the soldier the way the soldier was surprised by myself, I would respond in kindness rather than violence, and I would dare to verbalize the question: “Do you friend, even now, know / What it is all about?”
