  • Even though the hypothalamus is very small, it has a crucial role in many important function. The fucntions are, releasing hormones, regulating body temperature, mainataining daily physiological cycles, controlling appetite, managing of sexual behavior, and regulating emotional responses.
  • Hypothalamus is a slight region of the brain. It is located at the base of the brain, close to the pituitary gland.
  • You may ask how does the organ know to produce the hormone, well the hypothalamus has three main regions. Each one contains a different nuclei. These are a collection of neurons that perform vital functions, like releasing hormones.
  • The anterior region also known as the supraoptic region. The nuclei in the anterior region are involved in the production of various hormones. Many of these hormones interact with the pituitary gland to produce additional hormones.
  • Is there anymore infromation we need to know.
  • Well actually, the hypothalamus is involved with the pituitary gland function. The hypthalamus receives signals from the nervous system. When it receives signals the hypothalamus secretes neurohormones that start and stop the production of the hormones.
  • I know that there is two type of hormones produced. One set sends the hormones down through the pituitary stalk to the posterior lobe of the pituitary. Then the hormones are released straight into the bloodstream.
  • The other set reaches the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland via a network of blood vessels. The blood vessels run down through the pituitary stalk.
  • Well in fact you are all correct, before we continue watching the video as a class you should know that, the hypothalamus work with the nervous system. The nervous system helps the hypothalamus know when to start and stop secreting hormones. This means that the nervous system helps the hypothalamus complete all its functions.
