- “I believe Missouri should be a slave state because we will secede if it isn't!”
- Missouri is new territory and the North and the South are trying to figure out what to do with it.
- “Missouri is in the North, so therefore it should be a free state”
- “Yay! We get Missouri as a slave state now!”
- Congress drew a line along the Ohio river and everything above that line is a free state except Missouri.
- “Hey that's not fair! Oh wait, we get Maine as a free state. Yay!”
- “Okay then we want Utah and New Mexico as slave states!”
- Henry Clay proposed a compromise. It admitted California as a free state, which would please the North, and it allowed New Mexico and Utah to decide whether to allow slavery, which would please the South.
- “We want California as a free state!”
- “We will leave the union with peace!!”
- After 9 months of debate, the compromise is finally excepted. California entered the union as a free state and the South was aloud to be set up without any slavery restriction.
- Although this compromise was thought to solve everything, tension still remained.
- “ ‘Peaceablesecession’?? Are youtrying to start a war??”
- The Kansas-Nebraska act abolished the Missouri compromise, making Kansas a state that could decided if they wanted to be a free state or not.All the people, pro-slavery and anti-slavery went to Kansas to try and influence the vote.
- Woah! A new act just happened! It’s the Kansas-Nebraska act! I must go to Kansas to influence the vote!
- Not before I get there! Kansas will NOT be a slave state!
- Kansas had its popular sovereignty vote and decided to be a free state.
- This is not fair, we need to go to war about this! This is unexceptable!
- Kansas is a free state at last!!
