- After trying to overthrow the Batista regime, Castro was arrested. While in jail, he continued to push his Moncada Program. The Moncada Program had 5 aims: Reinstate the 1940 constitution, land reform, profit sharing, and end corruption.
- Don't you worry, I will be out soon! In the meantime I will continue to promote my Moncada Program!
- After getting out of jail, Castro formed a group of 82 fighters who were going to attack the Cuban military base. The attack wasn't successful, so Castro and Che Guevara, the doctor, fled to the Sierra Maestra mountains. Here, they began to form relations with the local peasants!
- After Batista's failed Operation Verano, Castro was able to take over Cuba and had full control by 1959. Batista fled to the Dominican Republic.

- After Castro gained power in Cuba, thousands of people fled to the United States as refugees. He wasn't popular among everyone because many people thought he was a communist, which at the time was frowned upon.
- Please don't leave! Cuba will get better!
- Castro appointed Manuel Urrutia as the President of Cuba, but he acted as Castro's puppet in the office. Castro had the real power in Cuba. Castro also swore to the Cubans that he was not a Communist. Castro eventually became the Prime Minister of Cuba, but it didn't matter because he was the one running Cuba behind the scenes.
- I appoint you as President of Cuba! Remember that I still have the real power though.
- Castro became the president of Cuba in 1976 and ruled until 2008. Castro also began to embrace his communist nature and ruling manner.
- I am president now! And I am a communist!
