Storyboard Text

  • Hi, I'm a Muslim scholar who volunteered to accompany Mansa Musa(The king of Mali) on his historic Hajj across the Sahara. The hajj is a pilgrimage to the city of Mecca, a journey all Muslims are required to take.
  • We brought slaves, camels, soldiers and civilians on our holy pilgrimage to the city of Mecca. Camels carried gold and salt to trade and give away as alms for the poor.
  • We travel through the Egypt. There are very few trees and there is very little water. We stop at cities like Taghaza and Walata.
  • In Egypt Mansa Musa gives away mountains of gold to the people of Egypt, causing mass inflation. When he went through Cairo he ran out of gold and had to borrow some.
  • There are so books with so much knowledge, I plan on bringing many back to Timbuktu to spread the knowledge.
  • After the journey I wrote my account of the pilgrimage, 60,000 people went, hundreds of camels and over 24,000 pounds of gold. The journey took over a year and was well worth it.
