- The mountain men were adventurous men who hiked through forests, trapping animals, and living off the land. They settled in Oregon Country, and had special survival skills. They were know as "Rugged individualists" which are people that follow their own independent course in life. They also made profits selling furs and spent winters in Native American villages-learned survival skills, married woman
- Mexican-American War
- The Oregon trail is a 2,000 mile route west to Oregon Country. Pioneers had to make the journey in five months to beat mountain snow and you would only travel 15 miles a day. Then in early spring-set out from independence, Missouri

- Manifest Destiny was the idea that the US is destined by God to expand its territory and spread its democracy across North America. First used by New York newspaper, by John O'Sullivan, 1845. Manifest Destiny was used to justify American beliefs in white superiority over Native Americans and Mexicans who had been living on the land for generations. 50,000 Americans reach Oregon, 1840-1860.

- The Mexican-American war was between 1846-1848. Durring the Mexican-American war US refused to annex Texas, the senate feared war with Mexico, Same Houston(president of Texas) threated to ally with Britain, US gives in and allows Texas to join the US. Some more things that happened in the war was Americans felt Mexico stood in the way of Manifest Destiny, Feared American rebellions and expansion into CA and MM.

- Mormons were members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day saints.  They were founded by Joseph Smith in New York, 1830. He allowed men to have more than one wife, then Joseph Smith gets killed by an angry mob in 1844. After that Brigham Young becomes Mormon leader and becomes governor of Utah Territory, 1850. While he was leader he took land from Native Americans. Then in 1896 Utah becomes a state.
- John Sutter discovers gold on his land in Northern California, 1848, word spreads to San Francisco then people got gold fever-people from US, Europe, China, Australia, and South America rush to California to find their fortunes. Forty-niners- the more than 80,000 people who traveled to California in 1849, minning gold, statehood for California, few got rich, but thousands etablished homes in California. California joins US, 1850.
