The year 2081 will be the year of true equality: no one will be smarter, more beautiful, or stronger than anyone else. By using handicaps, or items citizens wear to create physical obstacles, this equality is imposed and maintained for all citizens, enforcing it by the United States Handicapper General.
Upon learning that Harrison Bergeron was trying to overthrow the government, agents of the Handicapper General took him to jail in April 2081.Bergeron's are occasionally sad because they cannot think about it for very long. The transmitter in George's ear emits loud noises every 20 seconds, interrupting his thoughts; Hazel's intelligence is limited to short bursts of thought.
During the evening, Hazel and George watch ballet on television.Weight handicaps the ballerinas, who wear masks to equalize their looks. A 47-pound bag of birdshot hangs around George's neck. A bulletin announces that Harrison Bergeron has escaped. He is seven feet tall and has outgrown most of the handicaps assigned to him. A threat to the government's equality ideals, he is extremely strong and good-looking.
Harrison bursts into the TV studio in the middle of the bulletin, ripping the door off the hinges. The Emperor begins screaming, “I am the Emperor!Emperor!Emperor! I am tearing off my handicaps!”.A beautiful ballerina rises to join him when he calls for an Empress.Harrison removes the musicians' handicaps and commands them to play. They begin to dance, leap, and twirl around the set.
During the dance, Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicapper General, arrives with a shotgun and shoots
Taking a beer in the kitchen, George seems to have missed his son's murder.George notices she's been crying, but she just remembers something sad she saw on TV. While she can't make sense of the thoughts in her head, George can't make sense of anything because the audio transmitter blasts him with the sound of a gunshot.
