- "Hello, Edward. I have been waiting for you." (19)..... "You were a child when you knew me, that's why. You start with the same feelings you had." (19)
- Start what? Eddie thought.. (19)
- "My ball!" Eddie screams. "Dang you, Joe." (22)
- "Too hard!" Joe yells. (22)
- "I am your first person, Edward. When I died, my life was illuminated by five others, and then I came here to wait for you, to stand in your line, to tell you my story, which becomes part of yours. There will be others for you, too. Some you knew, maybe some you didn't. But they all crossed your path before they died. And they altered it forever." (21)
- "What . . ." he finally croaked. (21)
- Eddie was confused to be back at Ruby Pier since this was a place that he wanted to leave. He was more confused when the blue man said, "Hello, Edward. I have been waiting for you. " (19) Eddie was so confused because the man knew him but Eddie didn't know the man.
- Eddie and his friends were playing with a baseball he had just gotten from his birthday. They were playing and one of the kids threw the ball a little too hard and it went in the street and the driver of the Ford Model A car, The blue man, almost hit Eddie but swerved. The blue man was so shaken up by nearly killing a little boy that he died by taking a heart attack.
- The Blue man teaches Eddie that every life has a purpose and Eddie needed to find out the understanding of his life on earth. He teaches him that everyone is interconnected whether they know it or not. The Blue man says, "Each of us was in your life for a reason. You may not have known the reason at the time, and that is what heaven is for. For understanding your life on earth." (21)
