- Madam Loisel borrows a diamond necklace from Mme. Forestier to go to a party.
- After the party Madam Loisel loses the diamond necklace and makes her husband search for it
- Madam Loisel and her husband are unsuccessful in their searches.
- Madam Loisel is forced to get a job and work for 10 years to pay off the debt.
- Meeting up with Mme. Forestier many years later, it is revealed that the necklace that was lost was a fake.
