Storyboard Text

  • In soccer, when you kick the ball, you are applying Newton’s First Law of Motion.
  • Before I kicked the ball, it would have stayed in place but it was acted upon by an unbalanced force which caused it to move.
  • Since the mass of the soccer ball was less than the mass of the bowling ball, the soccer ball went further when I kicked it (use the formula F=ma or A=F/m).
  • I kicked a soccer ball and a bowling ball and the soccer ball went further (Newton’s Second Law of Motion)-why is this?
  • I applied the same amount of force on each ball but the masses were different. Since the bowling ball was heavier, it didn’t go as far because the acceleration it had was less than that of the soccer ball.
  • When I kick a soccer ball, I apply force to the ball and the ball applies the same amount of force in the equal and opposite direction on my foot.
