Storyboard Text

  • Otto Von Bismarck, a Prussian politician who was a pro-monarchy and had conservative views. Bismarck believed war was a great thing, by expanding Prussian power and promoting the idea of a Prussian-dominated Germany.
  • I am Otto Von Bismarck, a Prussian politician.
  • Join me in a war against Denmark, once we win you will get Holstein and I will get Schleswig.
  • In 1864, Bismarck persuaded Austria to join them in the war against Denmark and promised them that they could get Holstein once they defeat Denmark.

  • Prussia and Austria went to war and won against Denmark. After this, Prussia provoked a war with Austria and defeated Austria. Austria was then forced to promise to not interfere with German states. Bismarck wanted to create the North German Confederation in 1866 that was dominated by Prussia.

  • Bismarck then convinced southern German states to join. But southern Germans were skeptical of the military power and Prussia's commitment.

  • In 1870, Bismarck manipulated a note from the French Ambassador, saying that the Ambassador had insulted the Prussian king. After the public got a hold of the letter, both France and Prussia were furious. France declared war on Prussia but were defeated. Southern Germans sided with Prussia, which was Bismarck's plan.
  • On January 21, 1871, Prussia declared the German Empire. Prussian King Wilhelm l took the crown of the German Emperor. He was crowned at the Palace of Versailles in France. It added insult to the defeated French.
