The road was long and dangerous. The Pioneers traveled in covered wagons pulled by horses, oxen, or mules. The trip could take VERY long and the terrain was rough. Even with all of that, the Pioneers had many rivers to cross.

In 1819, the United States gained Florida from the Adams-Onis treaty.

11 states left the U.S. This is called secession. After this happened, the United States thought that it was a little bit illegal.
Fortunately, Florida had less physical damage after the Civil War and didn't have to rebuild as much as other states.
The slaves were free but had no support, education, money, land, or tools to work with.
