Exposition: The story starts on the planet Earth, where Arthur Dent wakes up to discover that his home is about to be destroyed due to the city wanting to make a highway straight through his house.
Conflict: A short while after Arthur protests the destruction of his house, his friend, Arthur Dent, convinces him to go to a bar with him. After they arrive, a spaceship looms over Earth, and makes a public announcement: Their planet will be destroyed in 5 minutes. .1 seconds before the destruction, Ford uses a matter teleporter on himself and Arthur onto the ship.
Rising action:On the other side of the galaxy, President of the Galaxy and his Girlfriend Trillain present the latest, and most technologically advanced government invention, The Heart of Gold. After beginning his speech about how this ship will change the universe, he and Trillian steal the spaceship after freezing everyone in the crowd.
Rising action: once the crew goes to sleep, the ship computer takes them to the planet Magrathea, which most people didn't believe existed. After they enter the planet, their ship is shot down, but doesn't get destroyed, seeing as it's indestructible. After Arthur gets separated from the rest, and meets an inhabitant of the planet, who takes him to the center of the planet.
Climax: After the group find Arthur, they find out that Earth was a supercomputer designed to find the question of the universe. Whats more, they also find out that mice are from another galaxy and are the smartest creatures to have ever existed. The mice then try to dissect Arthur to gain more knowledge about the universe, but they escape the mice.
Resolution: Before escaping the planet, they have a small scuffle with the galactic police, but no one gets injured. After leaving orbit, the crew realizes just how hungry they are. Zaphod then suggested The Resturaunt at the end of the Galaxy. The story then ends there.
