Storyboard Text

  • When John Adams heard how poorly his diplomats had been treated by the French, he was furious. When speaking about the matter to Congress, President Adams referred to the agents appointed by Talleyrand as X, Y, and Z, naming the incident the "XYZ Affair".
  • We cannot be treated this way!
  • How can they do this?
  • We must not be disrespected! WAR against X, Y, and Z must commence!
  • Cries for warfare and full-fledged attacks on France emerged after this event. George Washington was ready to come out of retirement to lead an army. However, John Adams used his brain and carefully thought about the impact of every solution before choosing the most appropriate one.
  • Off with their heads!
  • We need to try again for peace. We mustn't go to war.
  • WARTIME!
  • Finally, Adams decided to send new diplomats to renegotiate with the French. This time, France took John Adams seriously and Talleyrand came to an agreement with Adams. This event shows Adam's levelheadedness and thoughtfulness because he strived to stay away from as much violence as possible and attempted to resolve conflicts peacefully.
  • Thank you, Talleyrand.
  • I am so sorry for my previous behavior.
