- When the kimono first appeared in the eighth century, Heian noblewomen wore twelve layers, symbolising both the seasons and events during the peaceful Heian era of 794 – 1192 AD. Jez Willard from The Japanese Shop, took influence for his ideas whilst living in Japan.
- Kimono are made from single bolts of cloth, about 36cm wide and 11 metres long, which are cut into seven straight pieces. Two panels - each extending up the front, over the shoulder and down the back - create the body, two the sleeves, two more the overlaps, and a narrower panel the neckband
- Japanese kimono (in other words, ” gofuku”) derived from the garments worn in China during the Wu dynasty. From the 8th to 11th century, Japanese style of layering silk robes was established.

- Men kimono is a generic word like clothing. There are many different types of kimono for men. The very informal type is called Yukata. It is made of cotton and worn mainly to Festivals/Matsuri, or relaxing in Traditional Inns/Ryokan in the summer.
- Arguably, the main difference between a kimono and yukata is the collar. A kimono has a soft, full-width collar; whereas a yukata has a half-width and stiffer collar, due to the material it is made from. A yukata only has one collar as a juban collar isn't worn below.

- The kimono has influenced the ideas of many designers, providing inspiration for new fashion resources. It could be argued that few traditional garments have inspired designers to the degree that the kimono has.
