  • Problem Recognition
  • Company Development
  • Market Research
  • The Ultimate Hammock was ultimately thought of on a backpacking trip with my dad and brother to King's Peak. While on the trip we kept pondering what was a lighter way to pack a shelter. We decided on Hammocks but found it had many problems by themselves. Specifically they struggled in the extreme weather that the outdoors are constantly exposed to.
  • Getting to Work and Drafting the Prototype
  • The week after that trip, I started school and took an entrepreneurship class. In the beginning we all looked for a problem or pain point we could start. Very quickly I found that my hammock problem was perfect. After that I quickly made a value proposition, business plan, and started doing market research on competitors and consumers.
  • Testing the Product
  • Pretty soon I found myself in the streets talking to random people, friends of friends, and close friends about hammocks. These interviews opened my eyes to see that the real problem with hammocks was that they lacked insulation. This made them so one dimensional in where and when they could be used. I researched what other companies had done and found that they hadn't done much of anything. I quickly realized that I needed to combine two products, a sleeping pad and a hammock.
  • Selling Product at Outdoor Fairs
  • I started to make mock designs and work on making the hammock. The design process proved to be the most difficult as I had to work through patents, failing designs, and lack of information. Integrating the sleeping pad proved to be the most difficult as there were no suppliers for air values and little information on how to make one. I had to dedicate many months of research to find options that were going to work.
  • After finishing the designs I quickly began to gather names and numbers of people who are interested. Now I am in the testing stage of the product. Making a hammock and then making modifications on the daily to better fit my desires. I find myself going back to the design stage many times to fine tune size of the hammocks, looks, and functionality.
  • The end goal is to be able to release these hammocks by next summer and have them in Outdoor product fairs along with smaller retail stores.
