  • Existentialism/Christianity
  • How may i help you my child?
  • Sorry to impose, but i would like to know if there's any place for Existentialism in religion? Is there any hope for this cruel absurd world?
  • You see my boy, while God may have created man, he has chosen to give us "Free Will". All religions are essentially existential in nature thanks to the idea of free will, which states that everyone has the freedom to choose their religion, whether it be Catholic, Baptist, Hindu, Muslim, or atheist. You alone are ultimately in charge of this decision. Every act of faith is a "leap" past logic. Faith itself is foolish in this way. However, existentialists contend that because death renders existence itself "absurd," life does not make sense. Therefore, addressing the absurdity of life with the absurdity of religion makes some sort of absurd sense. If you get what I mean.
  • In a way yes. Christianity is built on personal relationships with God rather than on absolute truth. Making a "leap of faith," or firmly believing in God despite all evidence to the contrary, is necessary for such personal relationship. It is both authentic and absurd for people to maintain their belief despite all evidence to the contrary. The idea behind what I'm trying to say is not that we should all be flawless but rather that we should all have faith while acknowledging the doubts we have about God and the meaning of our life.
  • I guess i kinda understand. You mean to say that believing in religion is absurd because life itself is absurd? Hoever, it's "authentic" because its a choice of free will.
  • All right then. I'll do both for you my boy. You see, the brilliance of Christianity is not in any appeal to the rules of reason, but rather in its complete reliance on faith; otherwise, Christianity makes no sense. From our perspective, an authoritative command's content is completely unimportant; what counts is the claim it makes on our life. There can be no evidence of the power behind the order because if there were, we would be unable to accept it on the basis of faith. In conclusion, faith defies reason, and by acknowledging this, you are being true to your beliefs despite its absurdity.
  • I see! Thank you!
  • That makes so much sense! Would it be possible for you to give me any more evidence or a summary perhaps?
