  • You can take him for a sum of five rupees
  • Ok. I will take him

  • Railway Station
  • Sir, you have to pay for the dog with you.
  • No. I will classify it as a dog.
  • He is not a dog. He is my monkey.
  • Railway Station
  • Grandfather bought Toto the monkey from a tonga-driver for five rupees. The little red monkey looked out of place there. So, Grandfather decided that he will add him to his private zoo. Toto was a pretty monkey. His bright eyes sparkled with mischief and his teeth were a pearly white.
  • Oh no!!
  • Grandmother did not like Grandfather bringing home animals. So, Grandfather hid Toto in a little closet opening in the bedroom wall. But Toto being his mischievous self ended up tearing the wallpaper and the blazer hanging on the wall.
  • When Grandfather had to go to Saharanpur and he decided to take Toto with him as he was too mischievous and did not let other animals in the stable sleep. The ticket collector is the station mistook him for a dog and charged 3 rupees.
  • I'll take him for three rupees
  • Okay
  • Toto was soon accepted by Grandmother. Toto used to like warm baths during winter. One day a kitchen kettle was kept to boil for tea and Toto decided to open the lid. As water was warm enough for a bath, he got in. Soon the water started to boil. Thankfully, Grandmother arrived and pulled him, half-boiled, out of the kettle.
  • One day when one of the aunts came home, a large dish of pullao was on the table. Toto started eating it. He then picked up the dish and escaped through the window. He sat on a tree, eating slowly, determined to finish every grain. He then threw it down, and it broke into pieces. This made Grandmother very angry.
  • Soon Grandfather realised that Toto was not the sort of pet they could keep at home for long. They also could not afford frequent loss of dishes, clothes, wallpaper etc. So Grandfather found the tonga-driver, and gave Toto back for just three rupees.
