- Bruno was a nine year old German boy, Son of the Commandant of the army. At the beginning Bruno was sad that he had to move from his house in Berlin. They arrived at a place called Out-With at first he hated it and wanted to leave but after time spending there he started to like mainly because of his new friendship. It came at a great price because it caused him his life.
- Mother
- Shmuel was nine years old, he was Jewish and Polish, and was sent with his family to a concentration camp at Out-With. There they mistreated him and lived a sad life, he used to be happy and had home. Then he met Bruno that was always nice to him and brought him food. Shmuel lost his father and wanting to search for him, he lost his life while bing with Bruno.
- Lieutenant Kotler
- Father is a Nazi, he works for the Fury. He was ordered to go to Out-With and had to take his family with him. He is very proud of himself and his job, he is a nice person but when it comes to his job he would do anything for it. After finding out his son, Bruno was killed, he started being mean and angry at the soldiers and was later taken away.
- Gretel
- Mother is German, but doesn't always agree with what the country does. She is a polite woman and wants her sons to be the same. In the beginning of the book she likes her new house or at least accepts that they will be living there. At the end she wants to leave the house. She isn't very loyal to her husband since she had an affair with Lieutenant Kotler, and is sad he has to leave.
- He is a German Nazi, is a mean person and thinks that he is the best in the world. At the beginning of the book he is always mean to Bruno, he is always trying to annoy him. One time he shot a dog because it was barking. At the end of the book he never really changed but he got transferred out of Out-With.
- Gretel is 12 years old, and is German. She is the daughter of the commandant. At te beginning of the book she was mean to Bruno always making fun of him, and she likes dolls a lot. Gretel also accepts that they would be moving away from their house. She is more aware on what is happening in the world at that time. At the end she was more mature and didn't really like dolls but maps, she started being nicer to Bruno and helping him on certain things.
