- Guy Montag is a fireman who starts fires rather than putting them out. In his society books are known as useless and illegal. Guy becomes curious about why they are so bad when he is forced to burn down a women’s house with her in it because she wouldn’t leave her books behind. Impulsively Guy steals a Bible from the women's burn house.
- Why are books so bad? What’s in them?
- Turns out Guy has been hiding books in a vent of his house from his wife Mildred. She freaks out and tries to burn the books in the insenerator but Guy tells her to give the books a chance and if they still think that they don’t have value after 24 hours then they can burn the books together. Mildred is worried that if Guy’s boss, Captain Beatty will come to their house and sees the books and that he will burn their house down with them in it.

- Guy, was starting to be frustrated that Mildred will no longer talk to him, decides to call his former English professor named Faber. He wants to ask Faber about books, but Faber hangs up on him at first. Montag goes to Faber’s house on the subway, taking the Bible he stole with him.
- At first Faber refuses to help Guy so Guy bstarts ripping pages from the Bible. This scares Faber and he finally agrees to help, and gives Guy an earpiece so that Faber could be able to talk to him through the ear piece.

- Guy returns to his house and interrupts Mildred watching TV. Guy starts reading from a poetry book. After he finishes he buries the book and all of his others and takes the Bible to the firehouse and hands it to Beatty. A call comes in for the firemen and they get into their truck and zoom to Guy's house.
- Beatty tells Guy that his wife reported him for having books hidden in their house.
