- Harry, Cora, Dan, Laura and David Bittering traveled to Mars from Earth on a rocket, because there was a big war. Harry wanted to go home, but the rest of the family did not, so they stayed.
- The rockets were bombed in New York during the war. The Bitterings could no longer get back to Earth, and were stuck on Mars.
- While working in his garden, Harry noticed that all of the food was different. He refused to eat it, and would only eat stuff from the Deepfreeze that was all from Earth. Eventually, he ran out of food in the Deepfreeze, and had to eat the food grown on Mars.
- While with his family, Harry noticed that their eyes were starting to turn gold. He soon realized that his were too. They also started to speak a few martian words.
- The rest of the Bittering family and all of the other people living on Mars convinced Harry to move up to the Martian Villas in the mountains. They left their clothes, books and the rest of their human stuff behind.
- After the war ended, men came up to Mars to save all of the people left there. They found empty villages, and mountain villas with 600-800 Martians.
