- Art wants to find out everything he can about his parents experiences through during World War 2, so he can write about it. His book goes through his present day with his father to all the details of what his father went though and how he managed to survive.
- I want to know everything I can about what you went through in World War 2. Start from the very beginning.
- I do.
- Vladek married Anja, then they had Art's older brother. Anja's dad helped them open a textile business. Then Anja got depression and her and Vladek had to go stay at an asylum to get her the help she needed.
- I do.
- I feel so depressed and I don't know why.
- We will get you the help you need.
- I was drafted for World War 2, in 1939. Where I shot a soldier and then I got taken prisoner by the nazi's. After several months some men bribed Germans to release all of us prisoners.
- They were forced from their homes, given rations of food, and told where and when they could work. They were forced to sell things on the black market just to make a little money to survive.
- All jews are here by ordered to leave your homes and move to the ghettos. We are taking your businesses and you will need a permit to work.
- They made them register and sent over 10,000 people to their deaths, that they thought wouldn't be good for work. They jews had built bunkers in their homes to hide from the Nazi's.
- Take the dog and search the place for and remaining jews. Send them all to the gas chambers.
- We will wait in here for days until we know it's safe. Then we will wear masks to blend in with the polish workers to get out of here.
- Get in the truck!
- So many jews had to go into hiding, finding any place they could to stay safe from being taken by the Nazi's. Vladek and Anja tried going with smugglers to Hungary, but were betrayed. They gotten taken by the Nazi's and were split up from each other.
- Where are you taking us?
- Auschwitz of course!
