The King and Queen were extremely unpopular prior to the revolution. The estate system created unfair classes and treated people unfairly. The king tried to impose taxation on the Second Estate, but was unable to influence changes because he was not a strong leader.

The Women's March on Versailles was when a crowd of over 7,000 parisians, led by market women, marched to the royal city of Versailles demanding bread and political reforms from the king on 5 October 1789.

On June 20th, 1789, the members of the Third Estate took the Tennis Court Oath in the tennis court which had been built in 1686 for the use of the Versailles palace. The National Assembly was the first revolutionary government of the French Revolution and was there from June 14th to July 9th in 1789.
