Cole was transported to an Alaskan island on a skiff. When they arrive, Edwin says "What you do to the animals, you do to yourself". That is foreshadowing for when the bear attacks Cole for provoking him.

Cole is aggravated at everything and everyone, blaming them for his position. This irritation causes him to burnhis supplies, and this also fuels him with rage tomake a weapon to provoke the bear.

Cole attacks the bear, but the bear stops him and he crushes many of Cole's upper body. There he lay helpless in the storm, and he sees a nest of sparrows. Lightning suddenly hits the tree, and Cole sees the baby sparrows fall to the ground. Then he asks "Are you okay?".
Cole sees a few figures; he feels himself being picked up and pick on a skiff. Then he falls unconscious. When he wakes up, he sees Garvey, Edwin, and a Nurse in his room. The nurse explains his terrible injuries. But he feels better then he ever has in his life
