  • The first humans in New Zealand were the Maori, who arrived on via canoes between 800 and 1300 AD.
  • Through the time they were on the islands, the Maori people developed what is called tikanga, or customs and traditions. The most notable of which is the kapahaka, a traditional dance.
  • Eventually European arrive in New Zealand, building settlements for trading and whaling. At first, relations between the Maori and the Europeans were peaceful.
  • 
  • In 1840, British leaders convinced the Maori to hand over their land. The Maori eventually saw their land being annexed and being taken over by colonizers. Many Maori were killed throughout this process.
  • Throughout the 1880s, New Zealand pushed for independence from Britain. In 1907, they became a self-governing dominion under the UK. NZ was the first nation to allow women to vote.

  • After WWII, New Zealand signed a treaty with the US and Australia to guarantee mutual security between the two nations, called ANZUS. In 2010, earthquake caused severe damage in Christchurch.
