- In the Republic of Gilead, the number of fertile women has drastically decreased leading to the few fertile ones left becoming Handmaids. Handmaids have only one job: to give birth to healthy babies for society. Offred is a Handmaid. Although she is part of this oppressive system, she constantly thinks about her previous life with her husband Luke, and her kids.
- The night arrives where Offred has to attempt to conceive a child with her Commander. However, the Commander, breaking protocol, invites her into his office at night without his wife Serena present. He reveals that he wants to get to know Offred better over the next couple of weeks. Offred accepts his proposal with hesitation. On the other hand, Offred notices one of her household Guardians, Nick, constantly looking at her.
- Oh No!! Should I trust Nick? What if he's tricking me and leading me into some sort of trap?
- Offred's fellow Handmaid, Ofglen reveals she is part of a resistance group called Mayday. On the other hand, the Commander starts bringing Offred gifts. Eventually, he buys her a party dress from the old world and takes her to a club where men and women mingle freely without the restraints of Gilead on them. She meets an old friend name Moira. After her visit to the club, Serna Joy asks Offred to sleep with Nick to help her get pregnant as the Commander is probably infertile.

- Offred begins an affair with Nick. All the other Handmaids in Offred's district are invited to a Woman's Salvaging (public hanging), and then a Particicution (where Handmaids beat rapists to death). However, Ofglen recognizes the supposed rapist as a member of Mayday and she kills him to ensure the organization isn't compromised. Later, Ofglen kills herself, and a new "Ofglen" takes her place.
- Offred's trip to the club is discovered by Serena Joy. She confronts both the Commander and Offred. Offred is extremely scared, and she thinks it's all over for her. However, at the last minute, Nick reveals that he is part of Mayday, and that the Eyes sent to arrest her are actually part of the group. She decides to trust Nick because she has no other options.
- The date is June 25th, 2195. A speaker by the name of Professor Pieixoto is giving a speech about the "Handmaid's Tale" manuscript. He discusses the origins of the manuscripts, and how attempts have been made to identify the Handmaid and the other people mentioned. He also mentions that Offred's fate is unknown.
