  • PHYSICAL TRAITS:Dark hair and skin, has a long face and wears a burqa.CHARACTER TRAITS: She is insecure about her face, due to Nana constantly berating her about looking ugly during childhood.She was a quiet, thoughtful child. She was abused by Rasheed as she couldn't sire children, which made her cold and bitter. Dispite this, she finally was able to love another person, as she cared Aziza, Laila's daughter. Because of Laila and her children, Mariam finally was able to be a mother-figure and give and feel love, things she had wished for.

  • PHYSICAL TRAITS:Has green eyes, blonde hair and high cheekbonesCHARACTER TRAITS: Laila had an education in her childhood, unlike Mariam. Due to her brothers being sent off to war, she became mature for her age, as she looked after her mother after the brothers' deaths. She desires to use her intellect and knowledge to improve the world. She loves Tariq, but is forced to marry Rasheed after her parent's deaths.She cares only for her children , Tariq and Mariam.

He is quite abusive to Mariam and Laila, as well as Aziza, but cares deeply for Zalmai, his son, whom he wanted so he could fill the hole in his life when his first son had died many years ago.

She had to deal with her daughter Mariam, whom she blames her ruinned life for, and look after her by herself and with a few people in the community.When Mariam runs away to go to see Jalil, Nana feels ashamed of herself as she feels like she has failed as a mother, and hangs herself atop a tree outside the house.
