He was flown out to Spain. He comes across the Spanish inquisition who is murderous. Their God was violence and hell. The inquisition took him, tormented him, and tried exterminating him by the name of God.
He was tied and waiting for the judge to arrive. His fear is death and he can’t go through anything. He thinks of the horror and madness he will go through and he just can’t bear it. He has a death sentence and is scared for his life.
The person held captive wakes up in a dark room. His eyes are closed being in fear. When he opened his eyes there was nothing but darkness. He believes he's in a coffin and he's able to move.
Walls Of Fire
"I felt that I tottered upon the brink -- I closed my eyes as a readied myself for a fall into a horrifying death" (Poe).
"At the same moment, there came a sound resembling the quick opening, and as rapid closing, of a door overhead, while a faint gleam of light flashed suddenly through the gloom, and as suddenly faded away." (Poe).
He sees light and realizes that there are more things ahead of him. He then was thinking about his death if he had fallen. He sees a light which was some prison. He was confused by the size of the dungeon.
The pendulum started swinging above him as he would watch in horror for hours. As his body aches he eats a piece of food the rats spared and has an idea to stop the pendulum with his free arm. He thinks of this idea but the horror consumes him as he thinks about his blood dripping everywhere.
“Let it kill me quickly!”
The walls started to come closer together, and the temperature began to drastically rise. This resulted in the narrator to fall into the pit because there was no chance he would survive being squished by the walls or die from the intense heat. The wall pushed them closer to the pit while the narrator made his choice for his death.
