  • Rome was built on a hill in central Italy called the Palatine. The hill looks over the Tiber river from a dozen miles inland from sea. Rome eventually became a city spread from seven hills.
  • Influence of Etruscan Sports
  • A princess gave birth to twins Romulus and Remus. The princess's uncle, the king, thought they were going to grow up to take his throne, so his men tried to drown the twin babies. Romulus and Remus ended up getting saved and raised by a wolf. When they grew up, they built a city at the Tiber River, where the wolf had saved them. Romulus and Remus fought 
  • Influence of Greek Architecture
  • One of the structures the Romans adapted from the Etruscans was the arch. The arches stood on two pillars, topped with a half-circle of stones. A keystone in the center of the arch kept all of the other stones in place.
  • Influence of Greek Writing, Art, and Religion
  • Chariot racing was popular in Rome. When a chariot overturns, the driver could be ran over by the chariot or the horses. In the Colosseum, gladiator fighters fought off other gladiators and wild animals.
  • The Romans borrowed ideas of architecture from both the Etruscans and the Greeks. Soon, the Romans started to work with concrete to make larger temples and buildings. Large stadiums, such as the Colosseum and the Circus Maximus were created by the Romans.
  • The Romans wrote in all capital letters and carved important documents in stone plaques. Greek influence on Roman art was so great it is sometimes called Greco-Roman art. Roman gods are actually just Greek gods with Roman names.
