- President Jeffrson was looking for ways to expand the United States territory in 1803. The french have been fighting wars with Great Britain and were desperate for money.

- Lewis and Clark expedition was was a U.S military expedition, led by Captain Meriwether Lewis and lieutenant William Clark, to explore the Louisiana Purchase and Pacific Northwest.

- Jackson encourages the United States to relocate the "savages" to use the own land for growth of the U.S. President Andrew Jacksons speech justifies the Indian Removal Act which allowed for the Native American tribes to relocate.
- Zebulon Pike was the first American to travel to the territory by land. Pike described the land as a desert and thought it was worthless.
- In 1830 the Indian Removal Act forced east native americans off their own land. Most tribes found living conditions to be unfamiliar and difficult.
