The legend tells that in the convent of San Diego, in the city of Quito, lived a few centuries ago a young priest, Father Manuel de Almeida Capilla, who was barely 17 years old. He decided to follow the religious life in the Franciscan community, however he was not exactly the best, due to his bad conduct. Confinement and prayer did little to overcome his youthful impetus.
He was characterized by his fondness for partying and liquor. Despite having ordered himself and taken his habits, he did not leave aside his somewhat mundane and frivolous life. Soon his temptation called to his cell to visit some damsels and go out partying.
Thus, every night, he went to a small window that overlooked the street, but since it was very high, he climbed up to it, leaning on the sculpture of a crucified Christ. Until once the Christ, already tired of so many abuses, he asked him every night: Until when, Father Almeida? to which he answered without shame: "See you around, Lord."
Well, one morning Father Almeida was returning drunk, staggering through the cobblestone streets of Quito, heading for the convent, when suddenly he saw a funeral procession approaching. This type of procession seemed very strange to him at that time, and since he was curious, he decided to see the inside of the coffin, and as he got closer he saw his own body inside it.
From the fright the drunkenness left him, he ran desperately towards the convent, from which he never again escaped to go on a spree. Very scared and knowing that it was a divine sign, the priest never again escaped from the convent. Those who knew him say that this little priest was stung and received a great lesson that made him reflect and return to a life without vices.
