Though Scottish engineer John Baird demonstrated the first true television in 1927, it wasn't until the mid-to-late 1940s that television truly started to grow in popularity. By 1955, more than half of all American homes had a television.
Since television began, there were attempts to make one that played a picture in color. However, no stations really started using this until CBS after World War Two. It wasn't until the 60s that color television became a profitable business. By the 70s, most homes had a color television.

Starting in the 40s, specifically 1948, cable television was developed. Starting the rise in popularity in the 60s-70s, it didn't start to really peak until the 80s and 90s. It dominated the television scene for years. However, with the rise of cheaper streaming services, the popularity dropped.
With the revolution of the internet in the mid-2000s, TV shows followed, soon followed by proper services. With the diversity of technology to watch them on, and the cheap price of most, they dominate the world of media today.
