Who won the election? Why/What was the controversy?
Rutherford Hayes is from Ohio, he was the governor, had a reputation for honesty and held moderate views on reconstruction. He was against slavery and was fro safe liberalism. He also believed the federal government had a duty to protect the rights of citizens at national elections.
What was the compromise of 1877?
Samuel Tilden is from New York City. After the election, Tilden appeared to be the winner, receiving almost 250,000 more votes than hayes. However disputed returns from 4 states, representing 20 electoral votes, kept the outcome in doubt. He came up one vote short and would have won if he got the 20 electoral votes.
Rutherford Hayes won the election and the controversy was Tilden disputed votes from Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina and Oregon which were representing 20 electoral votes that he didn't get. He was one vote short of getting what he needed to win, yet if Hayes received all 20 of the disputed votes, he would have the 185 electoral votes needed to win.
The compromise was that the new government would give more aid to the region and withdraw all remaining troops from southern states. The democrats in return, promised to maintain African American's rights.
