  • The Korean War was a huge conflict between North Korea and South Korea. The war resulted in at least 2.5 million deaths. This war was the first military action in the cold war. In July, American troops joined forces with South Korea.
  • The Bay of Pigs Invasion- April 17, 1961
  • The Vietnam War was a long, expensive war. The war was between North Vietnam and South Vietnam with the United States. More than 3 million people were killed during this war. The war began because there was an on going conflict from several decades ago. 
  • Cuban Missile Crisis- October 16, 1962
  • The Space Race was a competition to achieve space flight between the Soviet Union and the United States. On July 20, 1969, the US successfully landed on the moon with humans. This event showed the whole world which country had the best technology, science, etc. The Soviets achieved space flight first with Sputnik 1 but the Americans were the first to land on the moon. 
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall
  • The Bay of Pigs Invasion was an exile invasion by Cuban exiles directed by the United States. The invasion was a US foreign policy failure. The defeat widened the political division between the two allied countries. The invasion strengthened the position of Castro's administration.
  • During the Cuban Missile Crisis, United States and Soviet Union leaders engaged in a 13 day military and political standoff. It was a very direct and dangerous confrontation between the two. In that moment, two superpowers came very close to nuclear conflict. This was a huge moment in history.
  • 5 days after half a million people gathered in East Berlin in a mass protest, the Berlin Wall dividing communist East Germany from West Germany crumbled. It was a pivotal moment, not just in the Cold War but in the history of modern Europe. Throughout the night, many people gathered around the wall.
