What does differentiating in the classroom mean? Differentiation means tailoring instruction to meet individual needs. Carol Ann Thomlinson
There are many ways to differentiate learning.

To begin, teachers must get to know their individual students. They can do this by using a parent survey at the beginning of the year. Formal and informal assessments throughout the year can also help teachers track student learning.
One way is to differentiate content. In a writing lesson you can let the students write a fiction story about a topic or character of their choice.
Another way is to differentiate process. In a math lesson students can draw pictures to represent amounts, use manipulatives, or a number line.

A fourth way is to differentiate product. In a social studies unit about maps, students can show their learning by making a map of a real or fantasy location or writing the directions to find a treasure.
Teachers can differentiate the learning environment. In a science unit about insects, students can use a magnifying glass to study insects outside, or they can read books about insects in the school library.
