- The Bittering family left Earth during the war and landed on mars and built a home. Harry Bittering imediatly doesn't like Mars and wants to go back home, but they stay when the rockets from Earth get destroyed.
- Harry begins to worry about his family when he notices small changes in their food and when their eyes start turning golden, so he decides to build a rocket to back home to Earth. The others laugh at him and mock him, but he starts building the rocket in the metal shop.
- The Bittering family decides to go to the canal to swim and Harry notices his children and wife's eyes are completely golden and they are all very thin . On the way back they notice the Martian Villas and decide to stay there for the summer.
- All the townspeople gather their belongings and set for the Martian Villas. They start talking more in Martian and the children have completely changed their names. By this point, Harry has golden eyes and is becoming skinny with moving to the villas and has lazy furniture in mind for their new house.
- The family has become almost completely martian like and are settled in their new home. They talk about how weird the human homes are and how there's no need to go back.
- Five years later, a ship with soldiers in it lands on Mars to go rescue the people on Mars, but they come in contact with the martians and don't know where the humans went. The martians forgot about ever being a human and the captain thinks they killed the humans, but the lieutenant says they were too peaceful to do such thing and it must have been a plague.
