  • The French Revolution was when the peasants and oppressed peoples of France revolted against the monarchy and its absolute power.
  • We cannot afford food & we are starving. We must rebel!
  • The monarchy enjoyed extravagant food and luxuries while the peasants suffered. This lead to the revolution.
  • Both sides fought violently; many soldiers and civilians were killed. Historians estimate 40,0000 people were killed.
  • Bastille Day - July 14, 1789
  • Storm the prison! Overthrow the monarchy!
  • Angry Parisians stormed the prison of Bastille, a symbol of oppression in Paris.
  • The Constitution weakened the King's power, created legislative and judicial branches of government, and tried to legislate equality and liberty under the law.
