Storyboard Text

  • Introduction to Mohenjo-Daro
  • The Indus people lived on the banks of the Indus river. The first farmers liked living there because it kept the land green and fertile for growing crops.
  • The Indus people needed river water to drink, wash and to irrigate their fields. They may also have used water in religious ceremonies. To the Indus people, their river was The King River.
  • Homes
  • Richer families had courtyards and the less richer families had flat roofs. 
  • If it got to hot at night inside, they would go hang out on the roof!
  • Toilets, Shower Rooms, and sanitation
  • In their bathrooms people stood on a brick shower tray and tipped the clean water over themselves from a jar.
  • Then the dirty water flowed out of the house, through the pipes and into the street.

  • Great Bath and religious purification
  • Daily cleansing is an obligation in these religions. By cleaning themselves with water, the worshipers believe that they are not only cleaning their bodies but also their minds of bad thoughts and their souls of bad actions.
  • The Indus people bathed in the Great Bath because they believed that it would purify them.

  • The Indus people wrote on soft clay  with a sharp pencil like thing!
  • People wrote the first line from right to left, the second line from left to right, and so on.

  • Distant trade and trade products
  • Instead of trading for money and coin, we bartered!
  • Some traders carried their goods on their backs or drove wooden carts pulled by oxen. Other traders put their goods on ships and sailed to trade with other lands.
