- Hi everybody, I am Mattie and I am going to tell you my story

- First of all you need to know that my family owns a coffeehouse. My father had built our home and business after the War of Independence in 1783. At first there weren't many customers, but business improved when President Washington’s house was built two blocks away.Father was a carpenter, but he unfortunately, fell off a ladder and died two months after the coffeehouse opened. Then Grandfather joined us.
- I was Captain William Farnsworth Cook of the Pennsylvania Fifth Regiment. I was an army officer serving under General Washington. I think Mattie should learn about military. And I ahve a sweet green parrot called King George
- I am the coffeehouse cook. I was born a slave in Williamsburg, my husband bought my freedon and I came to Philadelphia to pay for his freedom, but he was killed by a runaway horse.
- It all started when Mother told me that Polly, our serving girl and my friend, had died

- Matilda, Polly is dead
- Then, many rumors started accross town, and mother wanted to send me to the Ludington's were there were disgustings pigs and dogs
- 64 people have died, rumors say that there is a fever near the docks.
- Ohhh, I haven't told you about Nathaniel Benson, he is just everything a person wants. I always meet him at the market, that is loud and full, or at least it was.
