  • Starr Testifies at the Grand Jury
  • Yes ma'am.
  • Starr and Hailey Fight
  • The Grand Jury Does Not Edict One Fifteen
  • In Chapter 20, Sarr testifies for Khalil at the Grand Jury. As she is questioned about Khalil, she gets asked the same questions as she did before, and she is over it. "You understand you’re not the focus of any criminal charges, correct?” Bullshit. Khalil and I have been on trial since he died. “Yes, ma’am," (Thomas.19.88). Although she is annoyed by the question from Ms. Monroe, she still testifies at the Grand Jury to tell her story exactly how it was. This shows Starr's confidence and need for justice for Khalil.
  • When Hailey finds out that Starr was the witness for Khalil's death, Hailey gets very mad at Starr, as she did not tell her. Starr and Maya reveal to Hailey that she has said racist things to them to which Hailey responds, "It’s not my fault she can’t get over a joke from freaking freshman year! Just like it’s not my fault you can’t get over what happened to Khalil," (Thomas.21.37). This makes Starr very mad, leading into their physical fight.
  • On their way to Seven's grandma's house, the radio turns on and announces that the Grand Jury has decided not to edict One Fifteen. "If you’re just tuning in, the grand jury has decided not to indict Officer Brian Cruise Jr. in the death of Khalil Harris. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Harris family. Stay safe out there, y’all," (Thomas.22.170). Starr is angry and devastated to hear this news. After everything she has done, nothing has worked
