  • How Beowulf represents Revenge
  • In the story, Beowulf proves his Loyalty by returning to Geatland and proving to his King and Uncle that he can be a Hero. He knows that there are favors owed to the king, and so he is willing to fight to repay the King for his Uncle. In other words, Beowulf's Uncle sends him to fight because he still owes the King a few favors, so sending the most heroic man to fight the evils in Geatland, and risking his life shows the Loyalty Beowulf has.
  • What words come to mind?

  • Beowulf demonstrates strength when he fights Grendel. Not only does Beowulf fight against Grendel, but he then takes on Grendel's mother. Beowulf also shows his strength when he has to cross the sea, through all the sea monsters, and while staying underwater the whole time just in order to get to Grendel's Mothers' lair.
  • I feel like the author should or could have went more into depth about why Grendel was evil, other than the fact that he was a descendent from Cain. I found it interesting that nobody ever wanted to try and help Beowulf defeat these creatures. Obviously they weren't willing to risk their life, but Beowulf was by himself and probably could have used an extra help. Also, what made Beowulf want to risk his life so much?? I get that he wanted to be seen as a here, but why? Why couldn't he settle for just killing one of the minsters? Why was he willing to risk his own life so many times? Did he not have a life of his own, or a family that cared about his life?
  • Grendel's mother is actually the one who represents revenge. When she found out that Grendel had been killed by Beowulf, she almost immediately when to go and attack Beowulf, and the King's best men. She wanted them to feel how she felt, so she took one of the men and kill him, and then left.
  • If Beowulf could have ended differently, how would it have ended?
  • Why was Grendel evil just because he came from Cain? Could he have been able to choose good?

  • I believe that Beowulf should have ended so that he lived. He spent his whole life trying to be this big hero, so why'd it end with his death? Couldn't he have just died a peaceful death? He risked his life all this time, and so he couldn't even die a happy man?
