  • My Grandmothers Mother had come to America in 1938 from Ireland at the young age of 18. She came to America on her own to look for work and a better life. In that time America was seen as money land and is why she moved. Her brother lived in America and in order to get into America she had to be sponsored by a citizen to get into America so her brother sponsored her trip from Ireland to New York as she left behind 11 siblings and her mother to support them.
  • Settling Down
  • Get ready, we have to be at the tracks in 10!
  • Her Mother met her Father because his sister was married to her brother and the two soon fell in love and got married. They were both sponsored and promised a job in America so they left for a better life. When starting their new life it was luck that they learned English in Ireland at the College of Galway, but mainly spoke Gaelic. This would help them greatly to find work.
  • Growing Up as a First Generation
  • They were both very hard workers and had gone to Boston to find work. There were signs outside of shops that read Irish do not apply and that made finding work hard for them but they never gave up. The Mother worked as a house keeper and would send money and tea home to her 11 siblings in Ireland, while the Father worked a labor job on the railroads and would pick up many side jobs along the way never going back to Ireland.

My Grandmother was the first of three children that they had together. Growing up in Dorchester a lot of Irish immigrants settled there and would have lace curtains and were called the lace curtain Irish faced with adversity they moved to West Roxbury.
  • IRISH
  • Her parents were very religious staunch Christians and every night they would recite the rosary before bed. Both parents spoke Gaelic but when my Grandmother was born her Mother tried to teach her Gaelic but the Father forbade her from learning since They are in America now and must work hard and speak English. They wanted nothing more than to be accepted in this new land.
  • My Grandmother grew up hard working like her Mother and started working at the age of 12. She said her parents didn't talk much about life in Ireland and their journey to America but she knew it was to start a new life. Later on in life my Grandmothers parents both fell ill, father with caner, and mother with Alzheimer's. My Grandmother still cherishes memories with her parents and even raised me around those memories and keeps the memories alive.
