  • The Indian Removal Act let the federal government relocate Native Americans to land west of the Mississippi. The relocation was called the Trail of Tears, because so many Native Americans died.

  • John C. Calhoun wrote the Doctrine of Nullification, because he thought that the tariff act was unconstitutional. He thought that it helped the North in exchange for the South. South Carolina nullified the act, so they didn't have to pay the tariffs. Andrew Jackson was upset by this, and threatened to invade South Carolina and hang its leaders.
